![]() This set doesn't phone-in its extras, either. Regardless, Game of Thrones sounds marvelous on Blu-ray, and should easily be a go-to set when demoing the strength of Blu-ray picture and audio. For some reason, the opening credits audio seems far more compressed than the rest of the show, with distortion damaging the otherwise spectacular opening. The only real issue with surrounds appears in the opening credits. Action set pieces are even better, punctuated not only by immersive surrounds, but by room-shaking bass that rivals pretty much any big-budget feature on the market. Surrounds are aggressive and magnificently engaging, packing each scene with plenty of atmosphere. Dialogue sounds rather clean, with no high-end crackles or distortions gumming up the works, but at times certain moments came off a bit hard to hear, tuned perhaps a bit too loud. Audio, while also incredible, is not quite as perfect as the transfers. In short, Game of Thrones represents the very best of what TV-on-BD can look like. The encode itself yields no compression artifacts, banding or noise whatsoever. Fleshtones are spot-on, and contrast never wavers. Color favors a steely palette of grays, blacks and whites. ![]() Textures and details are wonderfully replicated and image depth and blacks are downright remarkable. The reverse side features a map of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros Considering HBO's incredible track record on Blu, with high-concept series like Boardwalk Empire, Band of Brothers and The Pacific, it should come as no shock Game of Thrones looks absolutely stunning. There's also a pretty awesome poster included in the set outlining the episodes, extras, and the various houses and characters seen on the show. The discs are kept in a digipak and housed in a thick cardboard case, which is covered by a gorgeous embossed sleeve. Each episode is presented in 1080p/AVC (1.78:1) and mixed in English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. The season's 10 episodes are spread across five discs. After all, if Game of Thrones does nothing else, it reminds us of the power, beauty and unimaginable potential of scripted television. ![]() ![]() But given the tremendous reaction audiences have had to this series, and to films of a similar scale, it seems only logical to give more entertainment of this style and scale a try. It would be difficult to do such massive, expensive shows on non-premium networks. If only all high-concept TV could hold the sort of scale, budget and attention to detail that brilliantly shines in this series. These elements combine to help paint a realistic environment that draws you into the story on a much deeper level. The sets, weapons, and costumes often rival those in Lord of the Rings. This is largely made possible thanks to the show's absolutely terrific performances, from the likes of Peter Dinklage, Sean Bean, Lena Headey and Emilia Clarke (among many others), not to mention the show's jaw-dropping production design. Martin's ongoing series, A Song of Ice and Fire, Game of Thrones is a pitch-perfect adaptation of his stunning work, while remaining accessible to those who haven't read the books. To those new to the show, the medieval fantasy series details the trials, tribulations and many rivalries of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. There's just something utterly compelling about the series – it demands you keep watching, and it doesn't do so with cheap gimmicks it genuinely draws you into the narrative. It captures you right from the start, and it grows harder and harder to turn away as the season reaches its finale. It's sprawling, intense, sexy and bloody as hell. Game of Thrones is a fantasy series unlike any other.
